چکیده

Size-selective harvesting is one of the most widespread anthropogenic impacts on marine species. The loss of larger (older) individuals due to such harvesting has numerous cascading effects on the biology of affected species and populations, including changes in life history, demography, reproductive output, and even ecological interactions (Fenberg & Roy 2008). Size-selective harvesting has been shown to elicit rapid microevolutionary responses in some wild populations (Coltman et al. 2003; Grift et al. 2003; Olsen et al. 2004; Kuparinen & Merila 2007; Nussle et al. 2009) and intense harvest-induced mortality (regardless of selectivity) over multiple generations should result in genetic changes (Allendorf et al. 2008). However, for the vast majority of affected species, we do not know whether observed changes have a genetic basis, represent phenotypic plasticity, or result from a combination of both (Kuparinen & Merila 2007; Allendorf et al. 2008; Fenberg & Roy 2008). The most powerful way to detect harvest-induced genetic changes is to analyze samples collected over an extended period of time as a species is exploited (Coltman et al. 2003; Kuparinen & Merila 2007; Allendorf et al. 2008). This approach has produced mixed results for harvested fish species, with some such studies showing a change in genetic diversity or structure over time (Smith et al. 1991; Hauser et al. 2002; Heath et al. 2002; Hutchinson et al. 2003) while others reveal no significant trends (Nielsen et al. 1999; Ruzzante et al. 2001; Chevolot

Anthropogenic harvesting pressure and changes in life history: insights from a rocky intertidal limpet.

The importance of large breeding individuals for maintaining the health of marine fish and invertebrate populations has long been recognized. Unfortunately, decades of human harvesting that preferentially remove larger individuals have led to drastic reductions in body sizes of many of these species. Such size-selective harvesting is particularly worrisome for sequentially hermaphroditic specie...

The Nuclear Receptors of Biomphalaria glabrata and Lottia gigantea: Implications for Developing New Model Organisms

Nuclear receptors (NRs) are transcription regulators involved in an array of diverse physiological functions including key roles in endocrine and metabolic function. The aim of this study was to identify nuclear receptors in the fully sequenced genome of the gastropod snail, Biomphalaria glabrata, intermediate host for Schistosoma mansoni and compare these to known vertebrate NRs, with a view t...

Biophysics, environmental stochasticity, and the evolution of thermal safety margins in intertidal limpets.

As the air temperature of the Earth rises, ecological relationships within a community might shift, in part due to differences in the thermal physiology of species. Prediction of these shifts - an urgent task for ecologists - will be complicated if thermal tolerance itself can rapidly evolve. Here, we employ a mechanistic approach to predict the potential for rapid evolution of thermal toleranc...

Hydrodynamics, shell shape, behavior and survivorship in the owl limpet Lottia gigantea.

On wave-swept rocky shores, limpets are subjected to water velocities in excess of 20 m s(-1), which may impose large hydrodynamic forces. Despite the extreme severity of this flow environment, predictions from conical models suggest that limpets' shells are typically far from the optimal shape that would minimize the risk of dislodgment, a deviation that is allowed by the high tenacity of the ...

An Investigation on Population Structure and Inbreeding of Sangsari Sheep

The aim of this study was to describe inbreeding and population structure in Sangsari sheep breeding station. For this reason, data from 7028 Sangsari sheep which were collected during 1987-2014 in Sangsari sheep breeding station located near to Damghan city, Semnan province were used. Lambs born during 2010-2014 were considered as reference population. The genetic structure analysis of the pop...
